My Baby's Hair

when we decided to move out here i was excited to be living in an area that was more diverse. being from idaho and then living in utah, where most everyone is white, i was excited for a little variety! also, i thought it would be great to see what black mother's were doing to their little girl's hair and maybe even have some of them give me tips and suggestions on quincy's hair. while out and about i have talked to a few different ladies about hair. some say to braid it, others say to leave it out. i had two ladies at old navy give me a list of things i could put in her hair. (these two were nice, a little crazy. vaseline was one of the "products" they said i could use. like i would put vaseline in her hair!) i am going to make an appointment and take her to a salon out here. i want them to teach me to style it a few different ways. ALL the little black girls out here have braids, twists, and lots of bobbles in their hair. quincy sticks out like a sore thumb with her UT headbands! :) but we get lots of compliments too. i was talking to my mom the other day and told her that when we first got here there was day that i put quincy's hair in 4 pony puffs and we were headed out to the grocery store. i seriously sat there and stared at her for a while trying to figure out if i should take them out or not. had i done a good job? were they like the other little girls i had seen around here? it was weird for me to be so paranoid about what others would think. here's the reason. if people don't like the way our family is who cares! probably if i was a mormon mom w/ 8 kids out here, i would get disapproval from some people too. there is always going to be haters. BUT i don't want people to think that i don't know how to take care of quincy because she is black and i am white. like i have no idea what to do with her. make sense? i ended up going out with her hair done, and of course it was no big deal. (stupid of me to think otherwise!) i look at a few blogs, have watched youtube videos, and done other internet reading on ways to take care of quincy's hair. i have tried to educate myself. (weird that i went to hair school and learned nothing about ethnic hair! i have been thinking of putting a class together and going to talk to the hair schools in UT county and teaching them my class. we'll see.) i love quincy's curls and think her hair is so cute. i want to know how to do it and take care of it so i can teach her. i want her to love her hair too. SO! i had heard about the skin and hair care line carol's daughter a while ago and wanted to try some of the hair products for quincy. a few weeks ago i was at the mall and ran into sephora. a really nice lady helped me choose products that would work best for quincy's hair right now. we chose these: rosemary mint shampoo (we shampoo once a week is all.) tui leave in conditioner (i can spray this on whenever. wet or dry. it detangles and keeps her hair looking shiny and moisturized. and it smells great! they all do.) hair milk, this is their best seller. it smells really good. it is a light lotion that defines her curls. this is the reason her hair is no longer frizzy. LOVE this stuff.) the healthy hair butter (i use this to help smooth her hair for pony puffs and twists. but it is really a conditioner for her scalp and helps prevent breakage.) quincy's hair has never been so moisturized and cute! i tried a few different products from sally's in the ethnic hair section and they don't even compare. LOVE this stuff! you can get them here, here, or here. weird that she is only 14 months and so high maintenance already. ;) these products are seriously AMAZING. sean and i can't believe the difference in the way her hair looks and feel. and really, if it's good enough for brad and angelina to use on their little girl, it's good enough for us! :) (oprah, jada smith, and eve have all endorsed this line too. just in case you want to name-drop!)

i researched this stuff a while back when you first recommended it to me, but the line is big and this is nice to know how you narrowed down your selections! utah REALLY needs a sephora! love that place. naomi has so much hair, and it keeps getting longer! she was strapped to me in wal mart the other day in centerville, and we were walking towards 2 black women, and silly me, i had a little anxiety getting closer to them, because her hair was not looking especially cute! why do we worry so much, but I TOTALLY know how you feel. even though that doesn't happen much in utah. its a big reason we want to move away!

I've been using Carol's Daughter for almost 2 years now (almost the twins whole life!) I LOVE the hair milk! We've also used the hair butter. I like that it's all natural so that there aren't chemicals making it more dry. I just also started using a curl product from Bumble & Bumble, and I LOVE how it smells, and the girls' hair is so soft. Kelly always makes fun of me for stopping black moms to ask questions whenever we are outside of UT. The one thing I have decided from talking to those moms is that extensions won't be a part of our girls hair for at least 10 years or so, so I better figure out what I'm doing so they can have cute hair! Please, continue to pass on any tidbits you learn, I'm eager to learn as well.
